For Hamanaka Sea Urchin by Ogawa Suisan, we source sea urchin from the regions where it is at its seasonal best. Our main sources are located along the coast of Hokkaido, including Nemuro, Shibetsu, Rishiri, Rebun, Erimo, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the Sea of Japan. By sourcing from different regions as the seasons change, we are able to offer fresh, peak-season sea urchin throughout the year.

Sea urchin raised in seaweed-rich waters is known for its delicate briny aroma, smooth texture, and rich sweetness and umami, without any unpleasant bitterness or off-flavors. We also carefully select plump, beautifully formed roe with a vibrant color and appealing appearance.

Hamanaka Farm-Raised Sea Urchin Has Been Registered as a Geographical Indication (GI)!
In July 2023, Hamanaka Farm-Raised Sea Urchin was registered under Japan’s Geographical Indication (GI) Protection System. This recognition assures customers that the product meets established standards for quality and distinctive regional characteristics.
GI registration also establishes Hamanaka Farm-Raised Sea Urchin as an official regional brand, helping us share the unique character and appeal of Hamanaka with customers in Japan and around the world.

What Is the Geographical Indication (GI) Protection System?
The Geographical Indication (GI) Protection System protects the names of products whose quality, reputation, or other distinctive characteristics have been shaped by the natural environment, traditions, culture, and social conditions of a particular region. These names are protected as intellectual property belonging to the region.
Only producers and sellers of products that meet the registered standards, including requirements relating to the place and method of production, are permitted to use the registered geographical indication and the GI logo.
Products bearing a registered geographical indication and the GI logo have been certified as meeting established quality standards and as originating from the designated region. All of Ogawa Suisan’s farm-raised sea urchin products carry this GI label.
